Black Forest Mountain Lodge is situated 4km west of Haenertsburg in the foothills of the indigenous Black Forest. This is the perfect base from which to do some weekend birding, as within a radius of 5km there is a good variety of habitats including Afro-montane forest and grassland. Within the immediate vicinity of the lodge there are a few earth dams where Black Crake, Purple Heron, African Black Duck, Half-collared and Giant Kingfisher and sometimes Red-chested Flufftail can be seen. The broken grassland and thickets adjacent to the lodge harbour Dark-capped Yellow Warbler, Barratt's Warbler, Cape Grassbird, Drakensberg Prinia, Olive Bush-Shrike and Buff-spotted Flufftail while the flowering garden shrubs sometimes bring in Malachite Sunbird and Gurney´s Sugarbird. Keep a look-out for soaring raptors which could include Long-crested and African Crowned Eagle and Jackal and Forest Buzzards. Some of the activities one can enjoy at Black Forest Mountain Lodge are birding, hiking, fishing, cycling and horse-back riding. Accommodation includes four en-suite double rooms, and one double room with private bathroom in the lodge. The Valley covers nearly 100 hectares of forest and includes the world-famous Cheerio Gardens, famous for their Azaleas, flowering cherries, and crab apples. Interestingly, these exotic gardens attract a remarkable array of forest and mountain birds, and a walk along the well laid out paths may provide sightings of Lemon Dove, White-Starred Robin, Barratt´s Warbler, Orange Ground-Thrush and Green Twinspot. There have even been a few sightings of Bush Blackcap here. Trails lead through a section of indigenous forest in which the elusive Narina Trogon is regularly spotted. Numerous small dams on the property attract the likes of Half-collared Kingfisher, African Black and White-backed Duck and Purple Heron, not to mention the resident Cape Clawless Otters. This ´Birder-friendly establishment´ is situated on a 422-hectare farm, which straddles the Woodbush forest and the Bushveld habitats on the Northern Drakensburg escarpment. Kurisa Moya boasts excellent birding on site, including 7 species of Robin including White-starred and Chorister. Most notable are 5 Bush-Shrikes, with the Black-fronted Bush-Shrike heading up the list. In Kurisa Moya's spectacular indigenous forest, other specials include the Narina Trogon, Green Twinspot, Grey Cuckooshrike, Blue-mantled Crested Flycatcher and Yellow-streaked Greenbul. The Twinspot Hide attracts Green Twinspots in numbers as well as Lemon Doves and other seed-eaters. The Bushveld areas have a range of cisticolas and warblers and the montane area is home to Gurney´s Sugarbird. Eight self-guided trails take birders through all five habitats.  Legalameetse Nature Reserve

This reserve on the escarpment of the Drakensberg, between Tzaneen and the Able Erasmus pass, has spectacular forest and rolling grasslands. There are historical records of Blue Swallows in the grassland, and this is a good site to see Black Saw-wing Swallow and other montane grassland species like Wing-snapping; Croaking and Wailing Cisticola, Denham’s Bustard, Cape Rock Thrush, Buff-Streaked Chat, Broadtailed Warbler and Malachite Sunbird. The forested gorges hold Cape Parrot, Red-capped Robin Chat, White-starred Robin, African Emerald Cuckoo and Yellow-throated Woodland Warbler to mention a few. The Reserve has various cottages that can be rented out and there is also a camp site.

Owl Cottage is situated 500 metres off the R71 in the Magoebaskloof Valley, 25kms west of Tzaneen and 15kms from the village of Haenertsburg, where there is a good pub with grub and a bistro. Phalaborwa is about 90 minutes drive. The cottage is ideally situated for sight seeing being only 7kms from the Debengi Falls turn off. We are on the southern edge of the Woodbush Reserve, good for bird watching, we are a Birder Friendly Establishment. Frequent visitors to our 4 Hectare avocado and pecan nut farm are Cape Parrots and both Vervet and the rare Samango monkey. We have a lot of beautiful bird visitors including Purple Crested and Knysna Loeries and many different sunbirds and butterflies come to visit our flowers for nectar and are a joy to watch. On this avocado farm, Tig and Phil have created a haven for birders. With their water features and bird feeders, they have managed to attract a variety of birds to the gardens around the cottage. This is arguably one of the best sites in Magoebaskloof to view the Cape Parrot, as up to thirty birds may come to feed on the pecan-nut trees in the garden during winter. You may also see Red-backed Mannikin, Swee Waxbill and African Firefinch on the feeders around the garden. Keep an eye out for the Grey Waxbill that turn up every now and then. Around the water features, you may find White-starred Robin and the Brown-hooded Kingfisher. Owl Cottage offers self catering for up to seven people, there is an open plan kitchen, with a Gas stove with 4 burners and an oven with a grill, microwave and electric wok and an open plan dining and sitting room. 3 separate bedrooms all with single beds, one en-suite plus a large family bathroom. We provide all linen and towels plus hot water bottles for chilly nights. There is no fireplace but an electric fire and an oil filled radiator will keep you warm. Owl Cottage is a non smoking facility but do offer ashtrays outside on the covered stoep. There is no TV but we provide board games and playing cards and a dartboard on the stoep along with 2 free standing braais and seating for 6. Outside you have a small herb garden and a good view of the valley over the sparkling swimming pool. We are a summer rainfall area and have some beautiful misty mornings and stunning sunrises.  Polokwane Nature Reserve

Although this reserve is best known as the most reliable site for the isolated eastern population of the Short-clawed Lark, it also provides excellent bushveld, thornveld and grassveld birding. The extensive road network, walking trails and bird hides expose the visitor to a variety of habitats, which hold over 300 bird species. Localized species found here include: Northern Black Korhaan, Shelley´s Francolin, Double-banded Courser, Burchell´s Sandgrouse, Bushveld Pipit, Great Sparrow, Chestnut-vented Tit-Babbler, African Wren-Warbler and Tinkling Cisticola. Raptors are also well represented here with African Hawk-Eagle, Black-chested Snake-Eagle, Secretary Bird, Wahlberg´s Eagle, Greater Kestrel and Gabar Goshawk all of which breed in the reserve. The Short-clawed Lark is best found where the main loop cuts through areas of short grassland with scattered shrubs. Listen for its high-pitched whistle and scan the tops of the broad-leaved Gymnosporia shrubs and Acacia trees. At the reserve´s entrance gate there is a neat camping ground, caravan park and comfortable chalet accommodation. A self-catering guesthouse is also situated within the reserve. To reach the reserve (formerly known as Pietersburg Game Reserve) from the N1 south of the city, turn onto the Tzaneen bypass road - R71/R81. Turn right onto the Silicon Road at the second intersection and travel for another 800m. The reserve entrance is on the right. From Polokwane itself, travel along Dorp Street in a southerly direction, passing the sports stadium and golf course until the road becomes Silicon Road.  Thabapashwa Hiking and Mountain Bike Trails

The Thabapashwa Hiking and Mountain Bike Trails lie in a unique moutain range between Polokwane and Mokopane. The 2000 hectres of the farm is dominated by huge granite outcrops that provide a range of habitats. There is a combination of thornveld and broadleafed woodland as well as riverine areas along a couple of small streams that run through the farm. The unusual habitat has provided for interesting sightings on the farm, the rocky outcrops and mountains are home to two pairs of Verraux’s Eagle, Lanner and Peregrine Falcon, Rock Kestrel and Cape Eagle Owl. Shelly’s Francolin, Striped Pipit, Cape Rock Thrush and Mountain Chat are also seen in the rocky areas of the farm. Other specials that can be found here include Ovambo Sparrowhawk, Secretary Bird, Barrows Korhaan and Freckled Nightjar. Other special sightings in the past have been of Yellow-spotted Nicator, Greyhood Kingfisher and Meyer’s Parrot. The accommodation on the farm is varied and complements the beautiful scenery by being build into and around the big boulders and landscape. The Dome Rock Camp can accommodate 26 in 5 huts each with it’s own boma and wash-up area. There is a freezer that server the whole camp and ablutions are in reed enclosures with hot and cold running water and flush toilets. The huts can be booked seperately. The Kanniedood Camp can sleep 14 and has a huge deck over looking the farm, the camp can only be reached by 4 x 4 or by a 10 minute hike. There is a more luxuary option in a fully equiped self contained thached cottage, and there is also a camp site for those who have all their own camping equipment. There are over 95km of hiking and biking trails on the farm and the are 7 bolted rock climbing routes for those who want to try something other than birding.

This provincial nature reserve, which includes the Eiland Holiday Resort, has many of the lowveld´s best qualities including fine tracts of Mopane and red bush-willow woodland, riverine forest, saline patches and doleritic ridges. A stretch of 10km of the Great Letaba River forms the northern boundary of the reserve. The special here is Arnot´s Chat, which is best looked for in the mature Mopane woodland along the tourist drive in the main portion of the reserve. Other lowveld birds of interest in the reserve include Greater Blue-eared Starling, Red and Southern Yellow-billed Hornbills, Red-billed Buffalo-Weaver, Bennett´s Woodpecker, Southern White-crowned Shrike and Stierling´s Wren-Warbler. The trail that runs along the river is good for Retz´s Helmet-Shrike, Thick-billed Cuckoo (summer), Brown-headed Parrot, Yellow-throated Petronia and Red-headed Weaver. There are a series of trails that take in some of the dams on the farm where there is good habitat for Warblers, Kingfishers and Cisticolas.
